It is tempting to start with league tables, and academic results matter — but the school that suits one child can be quite wrong for another. The most successful choices come from matching a particular child to a particular school's character, not from chasing reputation. This guide sets out what to weigh, and how to see past the polish of an open day.
Start with the child, not the school
Before looking at any school, it helps to picture your child honestly. Are they academically driven or a late developer who needs encouragement? Confident or quietly building? Sporty, artistic, musical, or yet to find their thing? Do they thrive in a busy, competitive environment or a smaller, more nurturing one? A clear sense of the child turns a bewildering list of schools into a manageable shortlist.
What actually distinguishes schools
Academic fit and ethos
Results matter, but so does how a school achieves them. A highly selective, high-pressure school can stretch one child and overwhelm another. Ask how the school supports those in the middle of the cohort, not just its highest flyers — that often reveals more than its headline grades.
Pastoral care
How a school looks after its pupils' wellbeing is, for many families, the single most important factor — and the hardest to read from a prospectus. The tutor system, how the school handles friendships and difficulties, and the general warmth between staff and pupils all matter enormously.
Co-curricular strengths
Sport, music, drama, art, debating, the outdoors — the activities beyond lessons are where many children find their confidence and friendships. A school strong in your child's passion, or rich enough to help them discover one, can transform their experience.
Size and feel
Large schools offer breadth, facilities and a wide social pool; smaller schools can feel more personal and harder to get lost in. Neither is better — it depends on the child.
Practicalities
Location, the daily commute or boarding arrangements, fees and available financial support, and entry requirements all shape what is realistic. A wonderful school with an impossible commute rarely ends well.
On league tables: they capture exam results at a moment in time and tell you little about pastoral care, breadth, or how a school treats a child who is not top of the class. Use them as one input among many, never as the decision.
Making the most of a school visit
Open days are carefully stage-managed, so it pays to look beneath the presentation. A few things to do and notice:
What to look for and ask
- Watch the pupils, not just the facilities — do they seem happy, engaged, and at ease with staff?
- Ask how the school supports a child who is struggling, academically or socially.
- Ask what happens to pupils who are not in the top set — where do they go after school?
- Ask about pastoral structure: tutors, house systems, who a worried child would turn to.
- If you can, visit on a normal working day as well as an open day.
- Trust your child's instinct — they often sense fit before the adults do.
Build a balanced shortlist
Most families benefit from a shortlist that mixes aspirational, realistic and safe options, all of which you would genuinely be happy for your child to attend. Applying only to the most selective schools is a common and avoidable source of stress. A well-balanced list keeps good outcomes within reach whatever happens at assessment.
